An homage to David Hammons’s "African American Flag". When asked to select a stole to wear for graduation we were presented with two different versions of Kente cloth. Kente cloth was created in Ghana, originally worn by Kings and Queens, and is now widely used as the generic print for stoles in higher education. The stoles allude to a generalization of Black people in education and a disregard for specific cultural heritage. I started a search for a flag that was specific to Black Americans, and found myself most comfortable with Hammons’s flag.
